Junior Match Results 2010 – AEGON Team Tennis Bucks

Summer Report:  This year’s junior matches involved some excellent tennis, some great results and most importantly some competitive but enjoyable games for our junior members. Our girls teams had some tough matches with 5 out of 6 defeats being decided by a  Championship tie-breaker.

On the boys side, the Under 14 team finished the season unbeaten and winners of their Division 2, many congratulations to Elliot, Spencer and Matt on some terrific results. Our U16 boys finished mid-table having played 3 very close, hard fought matches and our boys U12 managed 4 excellent wins but were just pipped to the Division 2 title, well done to Callum, Harry and Tommy.

Many thanks to all the parents who helped organise matches and to Tom for his continuous help and involvement with everything Junior!

The Junior / Senior Tournament a report by Richard King

the players Cameron & Nick - the winnersIt was the Mayday Bank Holiday and the weather was somewhat suspect as eight of the Club’s leading junior players along with a motley bunch! of eight senior members arrived for, what proved to be, a morning of on-court thrills and spills. The chosen format was for one junior to partner one senior in a best of seven game round robin event, with different partners and different opponents being selected for each of the five rounds played.

Thankfully the format worked great and after the youngsters and the geriatrics had weighed each other up, like a pair of sparring boxers, the morning settled into some highly competitive and fun matches.

The juniors were playing some fantastic tennis and without doubt bringing out the best in the seniors. Duncan “the wilderbeast” Wanblad and Darcy King provided the highlight of the opening round with a personal and almost bloody battle against Andy “the parrot” Ilsley and Emma “the younger” Wanblad. The spoils of war went to Andy and Emma and the private duel that ensued between Andy and Duncan during the rest of the day ended in a comprehensive and almost humiliating defeat for our clubs South African warrior!

The early running though saw young Rosa Halliday and Alex Hattam storm to the top of the junior leaderboard with Helen “the fox” Marlow and Beverley “the beaver” Halliday pressing ahead in the seniors.

By round three the competition was intense with Elliott Irving leading the juniors and Isaac “the geezer” McGowan sneaking his way up the seniors chart. However there were still a number of players in contention and by the time the last round kicked off it remained all to play for.

There was no love lost in the Mother and son partnership of Jane and Spencer King against the formidable duo of Tom “the coach” Dean and Emily Halliday, some high quality tennis was played but by this stage the cream had risen to the top.

As lunchtime approached, Cameron Buckman had emerged triumphant and was duly crowned ‘King of the Kids’, while Nick “the wolf” Wolfe joined him on the podium having snatched the title of ‘Top Senior Citizen’ – congratulations to both of you.

The tournament proved to be a big success and a seriously huge thank you to everyone who played and helped to make it so much fun, you were all brilliant.

Hopefully we can plan another similar event later in the season and involve more members, both young and OLD!
