Bucks Sport Awards 2011: Volunteer of the Year (25 Nov 2011)

I was delighted to represent the Club at the Bucks Sports Awards on Friday 25th November at Horwood House and am pleased to say that we have received the Award as Volunteer of the Year 2011.

The evening was a celebration of all the good work being carried out by different Sports clubs throughout Buckinghamshire. One of the special guests was Sam Quek from Reading Hockey Club who has just been selected for the Womens GB squad for the London Olympics. I was also able to make good links with teachers from Burnham Grammar, Alfriston School and the mayor of South Bucks who were all very interested in our activities, our investment in our junior coaching and the possibilities of working together in the future.

I could not be told who had nominated me but thank you very much. It was a very enjoyable evening.

I am aware that there are many people who have given so much time to volunteer at Gerrards Cross Hockey Club, and many have given that commitment over several years longer than I have.... I still remember Andy Matthews asking me to collect the Training fees for Club Junior Coaching on a Friday night some ten years ago which was my introduction to the Club as a "volunteer" and I have enjoyed seeing how much pleasure hockey has given to so many through all the Club activities and particularly the fun it has given to Alan, Tony and Marcus.

I must add that the fantastic performance of our Under 18 Boys in their 4 - 1 cup win over Reading Under 18 Boys on Sunday was the icing on the cake and proves the success of all our work with the Juniors over many years. To beat one of the top Premier Clubs at this level is a great achievement. Congratulations to Tony Kilbourn and the team.
